Editor’s Field Test: Eberle Just
One
Big-game
hunter Glen Eberle drew from his past experience as a member of the US
National Biathlon Team when he set out to design a full-size backpack
that could be carried comfortably into the wild while also holding his
rifle and enough meat to keep him in venison for, well, more than a few
dinners.
The “Just
One” backpack is an expandable (2,000-4,100-cubic-inch), top-loading,
internal frame rig that features a scabbard section against the wearer’s
back to accommodate a rifle. The hunter can reach over his shoulder,
withdraw the gun, and take a shot—all while wearing the pack. In
addition, full-length vertical pockets on the backside zip apart and
fold out to reveal a cavernous center section with mesh fabric that
allows bulky big-game quarters to cool during transit. A triangular
bottom flap Eberle calls the FlexChassis forms a lower shelf that, in
combination with horizontal and vertical compression straps, holds the
load close to the wearer’s body. Side pockets are accessed by
full-length zippers, and a top storage compartment features two
additional pockets. The pack is nearly in a class of its own in
terms of design, but... its price (is) well below that of comparable
products. Eberle’s eagle eye on quality control, his
insistence on lining stressed areas with ripstop nylon, and his
bartacking of web attachment points results in a product that should
stand up well to extended use.
Tramping
several miles of rocky, undulating Virginia trails, my Just One proved
to be a competent load carrier with good stability. And while it comes
in only one, non-adjustable size, the generous padding and suspension
dimensions combine with thoughtful ventilation engineering to make the
pack surprisingly comfortable. Available accessories include a
hydration system, raincover, and camp duffle. Even if you don’t plan to
ski into your favorite hunting spot against the clock, the Just One may
be the last serious hunting pack you buy.
